Developer Techland seem to have taken the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it approach” to the second installment of the Dead Island series. Riptide begins where the last story finished. I could tell you how the game starts, the storyline used to connect the two games and how thins go down in the first chapter of the game, but I won’t. The only thing you need to know is that water is going to play a part in the game, and just because a zombie is floating face down in a lagoon, doesn’t mean it’s not going to attack you.

Why Am I not telling you about the storyline you ask? Because you probably already know the basics, and that’s all you need to know, becasue to be frank, the storyline in most games is second to the game play, and this is true with Dead Island Riptide. The basic fact is your a survivor, on a monsoon ravage island, over-run by the living dead. It’s a survival role playing game.

Dead Island Riptide has it’s fair share of glitches and stuff that you expect from a video game, it has plenty for gamers and cynical reviewers to complain about. It all comes down to perspective. It’s about having stories to tell other people, about the time you made a mistake and found yourself surrounded, but some how managed to survive by the skin of your teeth, or how you fought your way through a camp site to get the necessary supplies to better defend you home base. 

It’s the end of the world, at least in your part of the world, and as we should all know by now, in any situation like Dead Island Riptide, scrounging is paramount. Money and supplies equal the ability to complete quests, to repair your weapons or to combine elements to create nastier weapons. And weapons are essential for your survival. Because, lets face it, you’re in the zombie killing business.

Your abilities to manage scrounging, weaponisation will be tested and you complete more tasks and kill more zombies, as you level up your character, the zombies get harder to kill, and the game throws a few surprises at you.

All in all, Dead Island Riptide is a great game, it puts you in many situations where you will feel the hair on the back of your neck stand on end, or where you will break out in a cold sweat as you backpedal and try and figure out how you’re going to survive.

And then there’s co-op multiplayer, which elevates it to a whole new level, but only if you play with friends. None of my friends had Dead Island Riptide when I was reviewing it, so I had to jump in and play alongside a random stranger. This stranger either didn’t have a mic or didn’t want to talk or discuss strategy. But following him around and helping him battle groups of zombies I could see how well the game would play with a few friends along for the ride. I remembered how well War In The North worked as a co-op with tow of my mates.

Hopefully Techland continue tweaking Dead Island and continue the series onto XBox One.
