Days Gone
Set in the beautiful, volcanic scarred high-desert of the Pacific Northwest, Days Gone is an open-world action-adventure game in which you assume the role of Deacon St. John, a Drifter and bounty hunter who would rather risk the dangers of the broken road than live in one of the “safe” wilderness encampments. The game takes place two years following a global pandemic which has wiped out just about everyone, but transformed millions of others into what survivors call Freakers – mindless, feral creatures, more animal than human but very much alive and rapidly evolving.
So yeah, basically an open world zombie game. Which let’s be honest ticks two major boxes; zombies and open world.
Of course, all open world games suffer from the same issues, repetitive gameplay being the biggest thing. But let’s be honest there are only so many things you can actually do in a post-apocalyptic wilderness.
Being a biker, you have your bike ride around no, find fule for (a constant battle), keep maintained and upgrade. You have a variety of weapons and more you can find. Crafting is alive and well, and one of the best early weapons, the crossbow, you can easily craft new bolts for. Silent takedowns you’ll soon learn are the best.
Things of course break, and your favourite melee weapon will break sooner than you want, forcing you to pick up another. Especially as your guns have very limited ammo.
A main storyline, sub-missions, and random encounters are all here, as well as a variety of adversaries – you didn’t think it was just the zombies, did you? are all part of the experience. And an experience it is, with the Playstation not only boasting lush graphics but also amazing sound that will keep you on edge. Just like in The Last Of Us, the sound of the freakers (or clickers in The Last Of Us) is almost as terrifying as the freakers themselves.
Days Gone is a defining game for the Playstation, and a game that will make XBox gamers a little jealous.
