With two new LEGO games released in time for the school holidays, I decided to wait on reviewing the The LEGO Movie Videogame until after I had sen the film. Whilst it does kinda seem like a bit of a cash in, being based on a film based on toy bricks and all, it’s just another installment in an incredibly successful and addictive series of videogames.

Playing along a similar story-line to the film, you get to play the hero, Emmet Brickowski, a boring construction worker who plays by the rules, but manages to get caught up in an epic adventure spanning many of the LEGO alternative universes. The LEGO Movie Videogame is the first LEGO game that drags you into a true LEGO world, where everything is mad out of LEGO, even the water. It’s a brilliant concept that works incredibly well.

Building the entire game out of LEGO isn’t the only fresh thinking here – regular characters can only build stuff if they have the relevant instruction book, so Emmet has to explore to find all the pieces of the instruction book, go to the designated spot and build. The building mini gam is the same as in Hobbit, with you having to choose the right piece from a radial menu, with speed and accuracy giving you a bonus.

Master builders however, can build without instruction books and are the ones who can build what ever is needed when you come across the bouncing heaps of LEGO. It’s a real co-operative game – or in single player, a character swapping game.

The game obviously follows the film, but in what I can only assume is an effort to make the game longer than the film, the story isn’t told nearly as well as it is in the actual film. It does feel a little disjointed in places.

However, visually the game is fantastic and the gameplay has enough variety and feels fresh enough to keep you looking forward to what the next LEGO game will deliver.
