MX vs. ATV Alive is a fun and demanding game, but it’s also a game that suffers from some serious flaws.
Racing games as a genre demand a lot from you. Not only do you have to learn the quirks and capabilities of a number of different vehicles, but you also have to learn a number of tracks, and how your competitions races. But with MX vs. ATV Alive you have the added complication of racing on uneven tracks that encourage air time and require you not only to steer your vehicle of choice, but also move the rider around to compliment the direction you’re wanting to travel.
It’s this aspect that MX vs. ATV Alive tends to nail, if you want to make that tight corner, there’s no point just braking and turning like you would if your were driving an Aussie V8, cause you won’t make the corner unless you lean into it.
Racing with both thumb-sticks takes a little getting used to if you’re used to driving cars, but once you get the hang of it, it feels pretty natural.
Wether you prefer to ride bike or ATV, MX vs. ATV Alive makes the ride fast and fun, once you’ve mastered your body movements – and become one with the bike – you’ll be amazed at just how fast you can get round the course.
That is until you make a mistake.
Go off the course or fall off your ride and you have to hit the reset button which will have you dropped back on the course and riding again with a small penalty. However, if you manage to get stuck in-between some of the scenery on the side of the track – which is surprisingly easy for a novice – there is no easy reset, so you’ll waste a lot of time either figuring out how to reset, or working your way out of the obstacles. Obviously this is a little frustrating.
The game offers a variety of different long and short tracks which should offer up enough variety, and of course there are different bikes and ATVs to unlock. The perplexing thing is however, that you’ll be stuck on the first two tracks for some time, racing each over and over again until you level up enough to unlock another track.
This is just plain weird. Most other racing games will give you a variety of events and tracks, and completing enough of these will unlock the next level of events and tracks. With MX vs. ATV Alive it takes a lot of work to unlock some variety.
As fun and addictive as it is, these minor irritations could easily become game breakers, especially if you’re not a die hard fan of the genre and just want to get out there and race as many different locations as possible.
The other noticeable thing with MX vs. ATV Alive is the graphics, they seem a tad dated especially when compared to recent racing games.
Other than that. MX vs. ATV Alive is definitely one for the fans and worth checking out if you want something a little different from your usual racing games.
