The Jimmy’s Vendetta DLC introduces a new character and story-line to the world of Mafia II where players can now assume the role of Jimmy. Jimmy is the guy the other guys call when they need to finish the job. He’s a hard as nails mercenary. The problem for Jimmy, is somewhere along the line he was made the fall guy for some Mafia boss and got locked up. As luck would have it however, a riot has just broken out in the very same prison where Jimmy has been incarcerated. Being a resourceful guy, Jimmy isn’t going to pass up on this golden opportunity to get out of jail, even if it means killing a few prison guards on the way. Whilst Jimmy’s vendetta is a story driven add-on, it’s not as story driven as the original Mafia II game. In-fact, from time to time it feels like you’re just going through the motions, doing side missions similar to what you might do in GTA. On one level this isn’t a bad thing, the missions are varied, and do cumulate with with a big boss style mission at the end. On another level however, it’s plain boring, as every second mission involves stealing a vehicle of some sort. These missions basically go a little like this: Drive across town to start the mission, drive round the corner to steal the vehicle, then drive across town to deliver it. As long as you’re not currently wanted or break any traffic laws, all you’ll be doing if driving. If the car missions were available as an optional extra – to score some gamer points – rather than a game progression tool, I think it would have felt better, even if it would have made the DLC a lot shorter. All up it was fun returning to Empire Bay, with new missions and locations, and Jimmy’s Vendetta is a good purchase for anyone who enjoyed completing Mafia II.
