Infamous 2

I’ll admit that I’m a bit of an XBox junkie and as such, my PS3 doesn’t get a lot of love outside BluRay watching.I’ve reviewed a few games on the PS3, mainly the exclusive ones, and to be honest they’ve been a bit hit and miss, but Sony seem to be on a roll now with the latest Motorstorm being an absolute blast and now Infamous 2.

I missed out on playing the original Infamous, so I won’t be comparing the two games, or looking at what’s new and what’s been improved.  What I will say is that it reminds me of the Xbox exclusive Crackdown – the original, not the sequel – only it’s a bajillion times better both in looks and game-play.

Ok, maybe not a bajillion times better, but you get the idea.

The basic story goes something like this: you play the role of Cole MacGrath, a dude who survived a massive four block explosion in the beginning of the first game, the effects of which gave him super human powers.  Now in this second game, you’ve got to flee the city after failing to destroy the prophesied Beast.  You travel south to the town of New Marais with your best friend and some chick who’s helping you.

Your special powers are of the electrical kind, and as in Crackdown, your powers can be increased a number of ways, giving you more and better abilities.

The idea is to become strong-enough to destroy the Beast before he destroys the whole world – to do this you have to continue along the storyline.  Because Infamous is a sandbox game, you can play the game your way.  Just the storyline, or you can do all the side quests as well, or you can just roam around looking for power-ups.  It’s an open world so it’s up to you.

However it’s not a 100% friendly world.  The local milita doesn’t like you one bit, so be warned.  Also, if you hurt innocent people, the civilian population will start to not like you.  Choose to be good or evil, it’s up to you and will effect the gameplay, giving Infamous a certain re-playablity over the usual sandbox longevity.

New Marais is a varied and interesting place, and the combination of parkour building climbing ability and being able to grind your way along power lines at speed make exploring a breeze.

Visually stunning and a joy to play, Infamous 2 has seen my PS3 get a lot of love recently, and given my XBox a very jealous green tinge.
