DVD Review: Why Him?

I really wasn’t expecting much from this film to be honest, just another typical over the top, rude but not funny American comedy. But who knew that James Franco and Bryan Cranston would work so well together?

Why him is the story of Ned (Bryan Cranston) who is a protective father, his daughter – who he thinks isn’t dating – Stephanie (Zoey Deutch) and her boyfriend Laird (James Franco) and the ruination of the traditional Christmas holiday. Stephanie, after accidentally letting the cat out of the bag via Skype – yes, that’s my boyfriend and yes he’s come over for sex – invites the family to meet her man, and spend Christmas at his palce.

Turns out Laird is an internet millionaire. And has no social skills, no moderation button. Hell, no off button.

Why Him is a strange mix of traditional values and raunchy, crass humour, that works fifty percent of the time. And the reason it works is the relationship between Franco and Cranston. Franco desperately trying to win Cranston’s approval but never will just because hes boning his daughter.

yes, I said boning. It’s that kind of film.

Whilst some parts will make you cringe Why Him is a surprisingly lovely story wrapped up in some genuine humour, and crass toilet humour.

Rating: R16 Violence, offensive language and sexual material.
