Where do you start reviewing a game like 3D Dot Game Heroes? It’s either a flash of sheer genius, or the most ridiculously boring game ever, and it all depends on your gaming history. Bought up on nothing buy a diet of XBox Live First Person Shooters, or even some of the current gen RPGs and you’ll going to be scratching your head and walking away from 3D Dot Game Heroes pretty quickly. However, if your first gaming console plugged into your TV and was called Pong, or you remember when the only arcade game around was space invaders, then you’re in for a treat. And also a rude awakening.

3D Dot Game Heroes is a homage to old school gaming, and more specifically, The Legend of Zelda. But rather than keep the old top down 8 bit pixel look, Silicon Studios have jazzed it up with some hi-def 3D graphics, that retain the blocky 8 bit feel. But more than that, they’ve emulated the game-play to a tee. Made sure you have to wait for things to load, and thrown in the frustratingly long text descriptions/instructions/conversations. In essence, 3D Dot Game Heroes is a tongue in cheek throwback to the good old days of gaming. Gamers who have grown up along side the video game industry will smile and chuckle at the plethora of in-jokes, reminisce about the old days, and then throw the controller at the TV when they suddenly realise, too late, that they haven’t been looking for save points and have progressed so far, only to have to start right back at the beginning after their foolish death. The joy of old school gaming. So 3D Dot Game Heroes isn’t anything new, and won’t appeal to everyone, but it is an absolute delight to play, and once you get used to the archaic controls – and having to find specific save points – you’ll have a ball. It’s an adventure game that will have you defeating killer bunnies, solving puzzles, tearing your hair out and laughing at the humour and not very subtle references to other games. The biggest thing when approaching 3D Dot Game Heroes, is to make sure you never take it seriously. Relax, unwind, have some old school fun.
