payday2-2I’m sure there have already been enough comparisons made between PayDay 2 and heist film Heat, but it was the first thing that sprung to mind when I saw the trailers to the game. And now that I’ve played the game, I can honestly say you’ll still be thinking of Heat when you play.

PayDay 2 is an original concept in the saturated FPS market, but one, that like similar four player co-op game Left 4 Dead, suffers from being annoying un-playable if you don’t have three friends who want to invest in the game.

You see, whilst PayDay 2 does have single player mode, your three criminal buddies that join you on your missions of greed and mayhem, just don’t have a clue how to act. Their AI is so bad as to make the whole game – well possibly not un-playable, but un-enjoyable. And that pretty much sucks the life out of it for me.

The only friends playing PayDay 2 at the moment are playing it on PC, and I’m on XBox, and whilst they are telling me how awesome it is, I’m stuck playing with total strangers – if they don;t kick me out of their game – who seldom communicate and at times their actions make me long for the stupid AI team-mates of single player.

The frustrating thing is that when you get a good game on-line, it’s easy to see just how much of a blast the game would be to play with three mates. How easy it would be to loose track of time and you get drawn into the game and just have fun.

The game, as a four player co-op works incredibly well. There are plenty of missions, with lots of variety. The gun play and tactical aspects (who will do what) and the various ways that each job can be done all add to a great game experience.

Graphically, the game is a little lacking, but when you’ve got a good team, and things are cranking, you really don’t notice because you are too busy having fun.

So, be warned, if you don’t have the ability to play PayDay 2 on-line, don’t bother getting it. If you and your mates are looking for a new co-op game to play, rush out now and buy four copies, you won;t be disappointed.
