If you’ve played the original Dead Rising and for some inexplicable reason didn’t enjoy it then stop reading. Stop reading right now. Go and play with your My Little Pony collection because you’re not going to like Dead Rising 2. Just like the original, Dead Rising 2 (DR2) is a fun and addictive game that essentially sets you on an adventure story with masses of never ending zombies wanting to tear your flesh from your still warm body. It’s so much alike the original, that fans of the series should have no trouble transitioning to DR2. It’s been a while, and I didn’t get that far into the original because of the issues with not having a HD TV. But with DR2 I was instantly in familiar territory. Access to and from your safe haven is via an air-duct, and you have help of a lady via a walkie talkie, but now rather than just a mall, you have a Fortune City, a shopping and entertainment complex, complete with Casino.

Movie tie-ins and kids games are never high on my list of must play games, so whilst I was about to become a hero to my kids through bringing home the Toy Story 3 game, I wasn’t exactly looking forward to a couple of nights playing the game. This all

I’m not really a sports fan. I have no allegiance to any team or sport. To be perfectly honest, I really don’t understand a lot of sports, nor do I care to. I do on the other hand enjoy playing games. being a passive supporter watching the game on a TV screen seems dull and lifeless. Who cares if one team just score a goal? It had nothing to do with me. If on the other hand, I had scored that goal, now that would be something. Even if it was just by using a combination of thumbs and fingers on the XBox controller. And if you want the total sports experience, EA seems to have that tied up. Head out onto the ice in NHL 11 and you almost feel like you’re part of a televised game of some weirdly popular sport.

It’s been a while since I played a golf game, and things seem to have changed somewhat. In the old days you got to turn your character around to face the direction you wanted to hit the ball in, then select the appropriate club, then determine the amount of power but pressing a button. With the latest Tiger Woods game, things are a little bit more advanced. For starters, you get a limited amount of focus. Focus is what Luke Skywalker would use when playing golf, however unlike Luke’s Jedi powers, your focus is limited and has to be used wisely. It can be used to help boost the power of your shot, improve the accuracy of your shot, add mid-air spin and give yourself a much needed putting preview. But use it wisely young Jedi, or you will use it all up. If this sounds all a little too easy, it’s not. It’s still a game of golf and with the limited powers EA have given you it’s still all to easy to keep getting the ball lost in the long grass or abundant sand bunkers dotted along the fareway.

When Crackdown 2 arrived on my desk, I decided I would take it home and have a play around with it for about n hour or so. I didn’t want a late night as I’ve been burning the midnight oil a little too much recently. So after the training level and a couple of early missions, I decided to explore a bit and see how many of those magic orbs I could collect. At some stage the game prompted me to look at my stats to see where my mission objectives were, so I did. But rather than looking at my mission objectives – which I already knew, but was choosing to ignore – I looked at some of the other stats, and something struck me as weird. When I looked at ‘time spent in Pacific City’ it stated that I had been running around the fictional, cell shaded location for close to four hours. Odd I thought that it didn’t use real time like most games. Why on earth would it use an excellerated time keeping…. hold on…. wait, it’s almost 1am already? Damn. So yeah, if nothing else, Crackdown 2 is the same level of addictive fun as the original Crackdown. But unlike most other sequels, Crackdown 2 doesn’t seem to subscribe to the bigger is better mantra. Infact there seems to be a huge amount of sameness to the game. Same location, same graphics, same gameplay.

The Lego franchise has already had a number of outings in the console gaming arena, Star Wars, Batman and Indiana Jones have all had the Lego treatment, some more than once. I have to say that I like Enslaved. Its a fun, challenging, addictive game. But to begin with, I didn’t like it. The first level is of course the training level. You’re a prisoner aboard a slave ship approaching earth’s atmosphere, when one of the other prisoners managers to escape her pod, hack into the ships computer system and set if for self-destruct.

Most people will sum up Demon’s Souls in two words; one of those words will definitely be “hard”. The other will be a mixture of colourful adjectives that are mostly unsuitable for publication. For my colourful adjective I chose “Too”. As a casual gamer with restrictions placed on my free time by work, family and other hobbies Demon’s Souls is simply too hard. I do not want to spend 4 hours replaying the same level over and over again. Some people will consider that a great challenge and revel in the sense of accomplishment when they finally clear the level but getting to the end of my 2 precious hours of gaming time and having made no progress at all is not fun. So the game is hard, but is it good? Well actually, yes it is. Very good.
