WHY SHOULD YOU CARE? Because skateboarding has been a staple of console gaming since the original Playstation, and whilst Tony Hawk may be the biggest name, Skate managed to turn the genre on it’s head with it’s unique control system. With it’s third outing, Skate is bound to be the best skateboarding game ever.
Alan Wake
THE OFFICIAL BLURB: Alan Wake is a psychological action thriller, a unique new take in the world of gaming. The game is set in an idyllic all-American small town and its surroundings in the state of Washington. Alan Wake, the game’s protagonist, is a bestselling horror writer, who writes a novel about his darkest nightmares. In the game, those nightmares come true.
The game features a massive, open world for the players to explore. The game design is mission based with the player as the driving force behind the action, and as with their previous games, Remedy again focuses completely on delivering the best possible single player experience.
WHY SHOULD YOU CARE? Because this puppy is one of Microsoft’s long lost babies. It’s been delayed more than your typical Auckland commuter train, but that can only mean one thing; it’s been highly polished and will deliver the goods with an original survival horror that will show everyone just how good the 360 really is.
Red Dead Redemption
THE OFFICIAL BLURB: Red Dead Redemption is a Western epic, set at the turn of the 20th century when the lawless and chaotic badlands began to give way to the expanding reach of government and the spread of the Industrial Age. A follow up to the 2004 hit Red Dead Revolver, this game tells the story of former outlaw John Marston, taking players on a great adventure across the American frontier.
Red Dead Redemption features an open-world environment for players to explore, including frontier towns, rolling prairies teaming with wildlife, and perilous mountain passes – each packed with an endless flow of varied distractions. Along the way, players will experience the heat of gunfights and battles, meet a host of unique characters, struggle against the harshness of one of the world’s last remaining wildernesses, and ultimately pick their own precarious path through an epic story about the death of the Wild West and the gunslingers that inhabited it.
WHY SHOULD YOU CARE? Because we’ve played an early build of the game, and despite having overly high expectations, we were duly blown away by it. This is the game that will remove MW2 from the top of the XBox Live play-lists. Trust us.
Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands
THE OFFICIAL BLURB:Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands is the next chapter in the fan-favourite Sands of Time universe. Visiting his brother’s kingdom following his adventure in Azad, the Prince finds the royal palace under siege from a mighty army bent on its destruction. When the decision is made to use the ancient power of the Sand in a desperate gamble to save the kingdom from total annihilation, the Prince will embark on an epic adventure in which he will learn to bear the mantle of true leadership, and discover that great power often comes with a great cost.
WHY SHOULD YOU CARE? Well to be honest, this one is a dark horse, but it does look spectacular, and with Jake Gyllenhaal starring in a film adaptation this year, we’ll be wanting to put this one in our XBox on day of release.
Alpha Protocol
THE OFFICIAL BLURB: In the world of espionage, nothing is as it seems in Obsidian Entertainment’s blockbuster RPG thriller, Alpha Protocol. Players will assume the role of Michael Thorton, a highly skilled government operative trained to eliminate threats to national security. When a mission goes horribly wrong, Thorton is the only one with the information, skills, and audacity to stop an impending international catastrophe. To do so, he will utilize the very government directive that the enemy sought to use against him – Alpha Protocol.
Set in the modern day, Alpha Protocol gives players complete control not only of Thorton’s actions but his personality and attitude as well, all of which will determine the future of the world as we know it. Blending fast-paced modern combat, significant character advancement and innovative RPG features, Alpha Protocol brings a fresh new perspective to the genre.
With a story rivaling the best spy-thriller novels and an immersive, ultra-realistic espionage world, Alpha Protocol will redefine the RPG genre for the next-gen gamer. Alpha Protocol is being developed by Obsidian Entertainment – creators of Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic II The Sith Lords and Neverwinter Nights 2.
WHY SHOULD YOU CARE? Because it’s an espionage RPG. Do I have to spell it out for you? Hmmm, maybe I do. If you’re like me, you never got into any RPG’s until Fallout 3 came along. Well this may not have the sex appeal of the radioactive wastelands, but it does have plenty of sex appeal. Hell, havn;t we all wanted to be a spy at some stage of our life?
Split/Second
THE OFFICIAL BLURB: You have made the cut to join a group of elite drivers chosen to participate in the global broadcast event known as Split/Second. Racing through a city created specifically for destruction, your goal is to become the season champ where fame, fortune and glory await. But first, you must survive a grueling 24-episode season of races in a variety of explosive locations to crush the competition and become the champion. When speed is not enough, the city is your weapon.
Split/Second is an intense action-racing game set within a global reality television show. Competitors vie to be the first to the finish line in a made-for-TV city set rigged to blow with the ultimate goal of becoming the season champion. Players in Split/Second don’t just collide with other vehicles to knock them from the track, but can also trigger devastating events and epic Hollywood-style explosions to take out your opponents and drastically alter the dynamics of the race. Being fast is not enough as players must use strategy and pinpoint timing to obliterate huge structures and towering TV set pieces to tactically alter the track or create entirely new routes.
WHY SHOULD YOU CARE? Remeber when the Burnout games were fun? Black Rock Studio obviously do, because they’ve taken the arcade racer and overdosed it on steroids. A racetrack rigged to blow so that you can take out your competitors with Hollywood style pyrotechnics? Yes please!
Brink This has now been bumped to 24 September 2010 release.
THE OFFICIAL BLURB: Brink is an immersive shooter that blends single-player, co-op, and multiplayer gameplay into one seamless experience, allowing you to develop your character across all modes of play. You decide the role you want to assume in the world of Brink as you fight to save yourself and mankind’s last refuge for humanity. Brink offers a compelling mix of dynamic battlefields, extensive customization options, and an innovative control system that will keep you coming back for more.
STORY: A man-made floating city called the Ark, made up of hundreds of separate floating islands, is on the brink of all-out civil war. Originally built as an experimental self-sufficient and 100% “green” habitat, the reported rapid rise of the Earth’s oceans has forced the Ark to become a refuge for humanity. Crammed with the original Ark founders, their descendants, as well as tens of thousands of refugees, the Ark exists in total isolation from the rest of the world. With 25 years of social unrest, the inhabitants of the Ark have reached their breaking point. It’s up to you to decide the future of the Ark and the human race.
WHY SHOULD YOU CARE? This is the dark horse, but we like the concept and we love Bethesda, so we’ll willing to gamble that this will be one to play.
