When this Forza 3 was first announced over a year ago – I was hesitant to get excited about it. I had been excited before Forza 2 was launched, and bought it but my enthusiasm wore off pretty quick. Yeah the graphics were great, the cars were nice but something was missing. It didn’t keep me going back for more.
But then I was offered the chance to review Forza 3 – I eagerly awaited its arrival, optimistic, but also had the disappointment I felt from F2 in the back of my mind.
From the moment I pop the disc into my console to this point – I have quite honestly not taken it out of my console! I am hooked! The racing experience the game draws you into is put simply, fun! The detail in the maps and the scenery is fantastic. The first night I lost track of time, it was a case of “just one more race” – I forget how many times I said that too my wife! I even had a go at drifting in a Land Rover!
The cars are stunning, each having their own idiosyncrasies – and you can spend many hours upgrading and tuning your cars for your style of racing and performance, or if your like me a simple quick upgrade based on how much cash you have and what grade race/car you are competing in, gets you racing sooner! The game has an driver experience system or XP kinda along the lines of what Call of duty MW has, which adds to the addictive nature of the game which I think its predecessor lacked. Making you want to just get to the next level time and time again.
One thing I must say that has bugged me when I am just wanting to get in my car and on the track is loading times! I Don’t think I have had those sorta loading times since my commodore 64 days – however there are some interesting facts and tips that pop up during these times.
A major feature I had enjoyed in previous editions is system link. I say I enjoy it as I regularly get together with a decent number of others in a LAN type environment and is always fun going head to head over system link in races. It seems they don’t think anyone likes this function and have taken it away. Trying to push everyone towards xbox Live I suppose? But have you ever tried putting 10 consoles on live over 1 broadband connection? Ever heard of lag? I am quietly hoping they make a patch available later that would enable this.
However, over Xbox live the game preforms well, where you can race friends, randoms, or even set it to just test yourself against A.I players. (which I was impressed with – you can put pressure on them as you would a friend, and they do occasionally make mistakes with the added pressure)I don’t think I have been this addicted to a racing game since Need for speed: Most wanted!
With the Xbox Wireless Racing Wheel the game preforms brilliantly as well. Very responsive and adds to being totally absorbed into the game!
Overall I Love this game! I keep finding new tracks, and beautiful cars to boot! With 400 cars – 100 awesome tracks (most are actual tracks in true scale, and scenery – with a few fictional stunning tracks created just for the game) and over 200 events! There is something for the racer in us all.
Who would have thought I could get a Fiat 500 to go THAT fast?
