It seems like Activision has decided to change the game plan a little bit after the stunning success of Modern Warfare 2. We all know that 2010 is Treyarch’s year with the possible Call of Duty: Vietnam. The game will play on the successes of the Japanese levels of World at War. Expect lots of jungle fighting, and hopefully a little bit of tunnel exploration.

Now comes the real news, there will be no Modern Warfare 3 in 2011. Nope. Activision’s third Call of Duty team are working on a new franchise based on Modern Warfare’s Ghost character. This will be the main game from the CoD series in 2011. We’ll have to wait till 2012 to see what Infinity Ward have up their sleeves, be it Modern Warfare 3, or some thing completely different, no one know yet. 

I know what you’re thinking – three years is a crazy length of time for a game to be in development. You’re right. But Infinity Ward won’t be working on the next CoD game for at least a year. Right now, and for the next 10 –12 months they will be working on Modern Warfare 2 DLC.

Spread evenly across 2010 you can expect at least two map packs and possibly as many as four. But what’s going to take most of Infinity Ward’s time will be working on two fresh episodes that will help bring Modern Warfare 2 to a close. These episodes are expected to be priced at 1800 Microsoft Points each and will contain a couple of bonus Spec Ops co-op missions – just to sweeten the deal.

So if you thought Modern Warfare was a little too short – much like many people complained about the last GTA game – you now know why. It’s the harsh reality of modern gaming. DLC works for the publishers in so many ways. First are the lower costs of producing a smaller ‘game’ and more importantly is the cutting out of second hand sales.
