Fuel is a mostly offroad racing game set in a world where large parts of the globe have been ravaged by climate change brought on by decades of environmental abuse – yes it’s a racing game with a subtle environmental conscience! Oil prices have rocketed as fossil fuels have become scarce and the sensible portions of earths population have moved to sustainable living in the major cities. But in true Mad Max style, a new era of racers have claimed the wastelands as their playground. Racing their scrapheap challenge vehicles against each other in flag to flag races with no rules, they compete to win all important fuel supplies.

Fuel is the only currency worth fighting over in the wastelands, and it’s the key to your progress through the game.   Read the rest of this entry »

Life is on hold agian thanks in part to this game. It’s similar to Baulders gate, Never Winter Nights and Diablo. It’s full 3d with overhead camera RPG with support for 4 player Co-Op through the ENTIRE story line.

The Manual indicated that the Level cap is at 200 which looks like its going to take a while (unlike the far to easy level cap in Fallout 3).

I am level 17 at the moment and I have completed 20% of the side quests without having finished chapter one of the main story. While I find it suffers from the issues of point and click gaming and I am a miffed about the lack of a first person view I am loving the first hard core RPG on the 360.   Read the rest of this entry »

cod-world-at-war-4After the refreshing change that was the superlative COD 4: Modern Warfare, the Call of Duty series returns to its well-trodden roots of WW2. But is there enough new material in there to fill a landing craft, or has it all been thoroughly riddled with bullets even before it hits the beach?

Things looked promising with the initial focus on the Pacific campaign, fighting the Japanese on small islands, facing jungle ambushes, and winkling enemies out of tunnel networks is all very different. The jungle terrain is a welcome change to the usual “French Fields and ruined cities” WW2 fare. Unfortunately, it wasn’t far into the game before we were back in Stalingrad…. Didn’t we do this in COD2? The game follows COD4’s lead in having two central characters, whose stories are alternated as the game progresses. Initially you play as Pvt Miller of the American forces in the Pacific. Then you jump to Pvt Dimitri Petrenko, of the soviet army initially in the loss of Stalingrad to the Nazis, and then jumping 3 years later to follow the Russian march on Germany. The player alternates chapters from these two stories as they play through the game.   Read the rest of this entry »

Assault on Dark Athena is like getting two games for the price eof one, especially if you haven’t played the original Escape for Butcher’ Bay, because a graphically amped up version of the game is included on the same disc and Dark Athena.

Though Butcher’s Bay holds it own quite well for an old game with new makeup, I’m going to focus on Dark Athena. Probably the coolest thing about the whole game is that you get to play the iconic character Riddick. It’s mix of stealth and first person shooter, as Riddick loves the shadows.

“They say hope begins in the dark… The darkness, for me, is where I shine.”   Read the rest of this entry »

SimBin’s understanding of the PC Racing Simulator genre has been transported on to the XBox 360, and it’s worth noting that this is probably their first foray into consol gaming, which in reality should indicate that they have had to deal with a steep learning curve. Possibly we should give them a little grace when it comes to any minor issues that may arise in the game, and see Race Pro for what it is: a really good first step for what has the potential to steal Codemasters crown.

Codemasters took a radical step when they released GRID. Without warning they totally flipped the direction of their flagship racing game and opened it up to a much larger audience, placing fun and accessibility over any attempt at simulation. This bought them a lot of flack, but in the end most people realise that GRID was a lot of fun, and in the end, having fun was ok.   Read the rest of this entry »

I’ve never played Pro Evolution Soccer before; my only experience at Soccer games has been through EA’s FIFA series, which whilst fun, had always had a little something missing. I wasn’t sure what that something was until I played Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 (PES).

Comparing the two games side by side is difficult, because PES is the only soccer game I’ve played on the 360. What I can say is that graphically it is awesome; I have absolutely no gripes with the graphics, the Ai or the controls – other that I wish a few more of my shots were on target! The main difference other that a graphics between the old school FIFA game and PES is the complexity of the game – it seems that with each years release of a franchises’ sports title, the game become slightly more complex, so that a soccer game that you might have played a few years ago and found to be real easy, would now have grown into much more of a challenge. This of course is a good thing as it adds depth and challenge to the game.   Read the rest of this entry »

Saints Row 2 brings true freedom to open-world gaming. Players can play as who they want, how they want, and with whomever they want in this sequel to the much acclaimed and tremendously successful Saints Row. Set years after the original, the player finds himself in a Stilwater both familiar and strange and challenged with bringing the Saints back as the rightful kings of Stilwater and bringing vengeance to those who wronged him.

That of course is the official blurb. Sounds sweet. I’ve heard reviewers say that Saints Row 2 – the wanna be GTA killer – achieves it’s goals in this second outing, beating GTA IV hands down. It apparently brings back the fun element that was lacking in GTA IV. Now I’ve played, and enjoyed every full incarnation of GTA, from the top down original through to the latest 3D offering. And I’ve enjoyed them all from the get go. Sure, GTA IV was lacking in some of the instant fun, and the storyline was a tad short, but as soon as I started the game, I was enjoying myself. Everything worked the way it was supposed to be.   Read the rest of this entry »

Solid Snake returns one final time for Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Armed with new gadgets and abilities, an aging Solid Snake must overcome all obstacles whilst using the chaos of the battlefield to infiltrate deep into enemy territory. His mission is to stop his nemeses from world domination…

This is the game that the Playstaion 3 has been waiting for, apparently, the first defining game for the console.

The real problem for this die hard Xbox fan however is the waiting that the game forces you to do.   Read the rest of this entry »

When it comes to serious racing games there are only two choices: Microsoft’s Forza series and Codemaster’s Race driver Series, with Codemasters consistently taking top honours. Codemaster do have an unfair advantage over Microsoft however, they’ve been creating the best racing games in the world since the original Playstation with the TOCA series, which morphed into the Race Driver series. It’s also helped spawn the Colin McRae rally games and Codies recently announced they had secured the licence to create a Formula 1 game.

But I’m going off on a tangent. My love in touring cars, with a real leaning toward the Aussie V8s, so it has been with heightened anticipation that I’ve been waiting for Race Drive: grid to come out. Sadly, the first thing I noticed was the absence of the local V8s. In fact Codemasters seem to have thrown everything out the door, grabbed the code for Colin McRae and built a circuit racing game around it. Read the rest of this entry »
