I’ve never been a fan of singing games – probably because I can’t sing. I got bored of SingStar real quick, but having three daughters and a wife, singing games are popular in my house. I somehow missed out on the original Lips – not that I lost any sleep over missing out – but when Lips: Number One Hits arrived, I was curious enough to see how this SingStar clone stacked up. There has only really been two games I’ve been waiting for all year, Modern Warfare 2 and this one. James Cameron’s Avatar is tipped to be the dawn of a new generation of movies, and for some inexplicable reason James Cameron has approved the release of the Game before the movie was screened. But that’s ok, perhaps he was using it as vehicle to set the scene for the movie.. And to that end Avatar the game delivers..

Right from the outset you are immersed into the Avatar universe and the story line, which at this stage sounds remarkably like what the movie will be. As a member of the RDA you discover a bit more about your surroundings and occasionally spot the odd Na’vi while fighting off the odd local animal. After the initial grind of the game is out of the way you get involved in the Avatar program, and much like the movie you are faced with the reality of life on Pandora. The great part here is that you can start making your own choices. Do you side with the Na’vi or stick with the RDA. Forcing players to make moral choices in a game is nothing new, but in this particular rendition of moral choice really does open up the experience into almost two separate games.  Read the rest of this entry »

After spending a few years languishing on the back burner, the Medal of Honor franchise is finally ready for a much-needed reboot. EA announced today that a new entry in the first-person shooter series, simply called Medal of Honor, will be coming to PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 in 2010.

What’s so different about this Medal of Honor? While previous games in the series were all set during World War II, the new Medal of Honor will take place in present-day Afghanistan. Players will take control of a Tier One Operator – an elite soldier whose orders come directly from the National Command Authority (i.e. the President of the United States and the Secretary of Defense).

“When we first set out to reinvent Medal of Honor, we wanted to stay true to its roots of authenticity and respect for the soldier but bring it into today’s war,” commented executive producer Greg Goodrich. “The Tier 1 Operator is the most disciplined, deliberate and prepared warrior on the battlefield. He is a living, breathing, precision instrument of war. We are honored to have the rare opportunity to work closely with these men to create a game that shares their experience.” [1up]

During the question and answer portion of an investor conference call this afternoon, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot clarified his company’s commitment to developing games for both the Xbox 360’s still-codenamed Project Natal and the PlayStation 3’s hopefully-still-codenamed PlayStation Motion Controller. “We have about ten games that will come for Natal during the first six months of the launch of Natal, and we expect between four to five games for the new controller from Sony,” Guillemot explained. “That’s the picture at the moment, it can change in the next twelve months.” (That “twelve months” reference doesn’t bode well for Sony’s purported “Spring 2010″ third-party launch lineup for the motion controller.)

When asked if those games were all new properties, or motion-enhanced updates of existing franchises (like Prince of Persia), Guillemot responded, “I didn’t count the games that in fact are supporting the new functions that those accessories will bring. I was more speaking about casual games that we are doing on those two machines; we can consider that on those games it’s 70 percent new property.” Or – if you consider Guillemot’s suggestion of ten games for Natal and “four to five” for PlayStation Motion Controller – that’s roughly ten new casual properties coming from Ubisoft.
