Open that door or kick it in? Use your gun – or use your phone? There are no right or wrong answers – but you’ll live with the consequences of what you do.

Sony Computer Entertainment has now released a title that pushes the boundaries of intelligent gaming: Heavy Rain exclusive to PlayStation 3 is available instore now. Apparently Time Magazine described Modern Warfare 2 as having “something intelligent to say about contemporary military conflicts.” We’re not sure if anyone at Time magazine actually played the game, but Infinity Ward seem to be taking it as Gospel that they have an ”intelligent’ game on their hands, and don’t want to sully it with the inclusion of Nazi Zombies.

And good on them too. Nazi zombies would just be silly in a Modern Warfare game.   Read the rest of this entry »

Back in 2005 I picked up a game in a bargain bin in Whitcoulls for the original XBox. That game was Doom 3. Because I had young kids and a wife who didn’t want me playing it in front of her, I had to play it late at night with the headphones on. What the hell I figured, may as well go the whole nine yards and play it in the dark. You know, just so I can immerse myself in the game.

I lasted less than an hour before the XBox was off and I was in bed. The game was so freaking scary that I put it on Trade Me the next day.

I’m a little bit older now, though I’m not sure if I’m any wiser. Especially seeing as I repeated the same process with Aliens Vs Predator as I did with Doom 3. Minus the headphones ’cause I’ve got a decent sound system hooked up to my ‘Box.   Read the rest of this entry »

An LA casting call for Call of Duty-related “voice over/motion capture” for an Activision “video game” has described character Frank Barnes as being part of an elite Vietnam unit, the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam – Studies and Observations Group.

SOG was responsible for covert operations in Vietnam, and was active from 1964-1972.

The news appears to confirm the game for a Vietnam setting. This follows heavy tips that Treyarch’s next Call of Duty game, slated to release towards the end of this year, would take place during the Vietnam War.   Read the rest of this entry »

Have you downloaded the Battlefield Bad Company 2 demo on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360? If you have, you’re not alone. EA has tweeted that some 3.5 million people have taken the plunge on both platforms.

The demo launched earlier this month, and will end next week. Interest in the demo can potentially be chalked up to Battlefield 1943, which enjoyed considerable success as a downloadable title last year.

If you haven’t tried it out, you have until February 25 to download it and play it for yourself. After that, you’ll have to wait until it arrives on the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 on March 2. [1up]
