I was out of the office on Friday so missed out on this email from Microsoft, but seeing as its great news I think it’s still worth posting… Beginning 22nd September, the recommended retail price of an Xbox 360 Elite will drop by $100, retailing for just $499 in New Zealand. On top of that customers buying an Xbox 360 Elite from the day of the price drop through to October 20th 2009 will receive a bonus copy of the highly anticipated blockbuster title Halo 3: ODST.
With the Xbox 360 Arcade starting at a recommended retail price of just $349, Xbox 360 puts all your entertainment in one place. In time for Christmas, you can play games, watch movies and keep up with your Twitter and Facebook social circles, all from your living room. The Xbox 360 Pro console will remain available at $449.00 (RRP) while supplies last and, as announced earlier this year; the Xbox 360 you buy today will work with code-named “Project Natal” and controller-free gaming in the future. Following circulating rumors last night, Infinity Ward’s Robert Bowling has confirmed via Twitter that Hans Zimmer will be composing the score for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. This is his first work on a video game, but he’s well-known as a prolific composer for Hollywood films. His resume includes over 100 movies going back 25 years in the industry, and he won an Oscar for his work composing The Lion King.
Other notable contributions from Zimmer include Thelma and Louise, Gladiator, and both of the recent Batman films. Alongside Modern Warfare 2, he’s also currently working on Sherlock Holmes and Inception. Apparently he doesn’t sleep. [1up]

The Official UK Xbox Magazine decided to celebrate their 50th issue by compiling a list of the 50 greatest Xbox 360 games currently available. It wasn’t going to be a list of 50 games with the highest scores; rather 50 games that the team at XBM decided were the best, and thought every Xbox gamer should play over all other games. 50, though it was the perfect number for a 50th issue, seemed a little on the high side, so we decided to spotlight just the top ten (you can see the whole list here) of which I’ve personally only played 5. Ooops. Read the rest of this entry »

Buried amongst the news of the PS3 Slim, was the news that Sony are releasing another portable platform to compliment the existing PSP.
The PSP Go is a light weight pocket sized gaming platform which actually packs quite a bit of punch. Gameguide was fortunate to spend a bit of time on the PSP Go, even trailing God of War, and it would be fair to say we were not disappointed.
The display is nice, the unit is easy to hold and the game felt very very responsive. In fact there really wasn’t much to complain about in terms of performance. Read the rest of this entry »

Microsoft announced that the Xbox 360 has sold 700,000 in the land of g’days and kiwis, with the green eye of the console fixing its gaze on a million sales by Christmas. According to Gamespot, the company’s manager for Australia and New Zealand labeled the console as the fastest growing in the region — not dissimilar to statements made by US execs about their own region.
The company didn’t hint at any price or console changes for the Xbox 360 in the region. Execs are “confident” that they’ll reach the million goal with the “console’s current price point.” [joystiq]
Update: XBox NZ just told us that they are definitely on target for Christmas and that currently there’s one console for every 16 households in New Zealand, which basically means you’re not the only one in your street hanging out for ODST or MW2 to drop later in the year.
Matt Rummel, Business manager Harvey Norman had this to say about the 360’s continuing growth;
“People are pulling back on certain luxuries, but are still spending on goods that make the home a more enjoyable place. Products such as the Xbox 360 provide good value entertainment for the family and are still strong sellers for us. We expect this to continue, especially as Xbox 360 continues to release strong titles, and makes further in-roads into the family and female markets. People are also becoming more tech-savvy, and starting to use devices like the Xbox 360 to download content online, and this will also drive growth in the category.”

Fat scruffy guy talks to skinny guy about all the MadCatz gaming gear being produced for Modern Warfare 2. The guy prattles on for over 10 minutes, gushing over his companies range of XBox 360, PS3 and PC gear, all with the MW2 branding, and cutting edge technology such as the throat communicator, based on military specs, but conveniently doesn’t work anything like military specs. A good video for insomniacs.
