Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey didn’t grab me like most other Assassin’s Creed games have during my first few hours of playing. Sure I got to choose if I wanted to be a man or a woman, but the game seemed to be lacking something.
This however turned out to be a minor – setting the stage type start to the game – and by the time I had finished my second night of playing I was hooked. This massive and beautiful rendition of ancient Adriatic region was chock full of things to do and discover.
The combat system has been carried over from Origins, meaning that combat is free flowing and a mixture of light or heavy attacks and ranged combat. Add to this the progression system that allows you to loot better weapons, or pay money to upgrade your favorite weapon to keep it competitive at what ever level you have ascended to.
But be careful who you attack, because Odyssey has a notoriety system that will kick in and ruin your day. Get too much notoriety and mercenaries will soon be hunting you down. Of course, the first ones will be nothing more than an annoying gnat, but as you progress the mercs become formidable foe who sometimes pop up whilst you’re trying to complete a mission.
Leveling is as simple as getting enough experience points and choosing a new skill. The real decisions come from Odyssey’s three different skill trees: Warrior, Hunter, and Assassin, each with their own distinct abilities, giving you the option to build your character to suit your play style.
Naval combat is back and better than ever, firing arrows at your opponent to weaken them and then boarding them to finish them off is great, smashing into them at full speed and cleaving their ship in half is even better. Even better are the upgrade options for your ship, meaning that towards the end of your play through, you should be able to take on anything the Adriatic Sea can throw at you.
What started out a little rocky, quickly turned into an engrossing immersive game, that is most certainly the best game in the series.
